The Protected Critical Infrastructure Information (PCII)
Program, established by the Department of Homeland Security in response to
the Critical Infrastructure Information Act of 2002, enables the private
sector to voluntarily share sensitive information about critical
infrastructure with government entities. The act protects information
validated as PCII from public release under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA),
state sunshine laws, and from use in civil litigation.
PCII provides government agencies with critical
information to assess threats and vulnerabilities. Analysts may use this
information to evaluate physical security risks, create reports suggesting
improvements to our country’s emergency preparedness, or assist in disaster
recovery planning.
The PCII Program gives the highest priority to
safeguarding information submitted by private companies. Government entities
must meet basic requirements for safeguarding PCII and be formally
accredited by the PCII Program Office. The Program Office will monitor
on-going compliance with these requirements to ensure PCII is not mishandled
or misused. Program success depends on ensuring that information shared by
the private sector remains protected.
If your program needs critical infrastructure
information, please contact the PCII Program Office to advise what critical
infrastructure information is needed. The Program Office will work with you
to receive and protect this information. Contact the PCII Program Office at
202-360-3023 or via e-mail at pcii-info@dhs.gov.
